Are Labelling Laws An Issue To Australian Farmers?

The ABA has called on Minister McGauran to enforce his Government’s Labelling Laws on US/Brazilian Beef Imports. And its Chairman Brad Bellinger has stated that, "Australia, with our clean image and the very costly NLIS is bringing in product that could be contaminated in Brazil or the USA on its way here..".

Is this something that irks Australia's farmers or is the ABA for some reason way off the mark?

Do you think that such action could potentially damage the way in which other markets such as Korea and Japan view our meat health standards and as a result our own product that we are exporting?

What is the MLA's opinion on this issue?

What do you think? (click on the 'comments' link down to the right to leave your feedback)

Here is a letter to The Editor, Queensland Country Life on 26th June 2007.

Dear Sir,

Mr Mark Phelps “NO US beef, no credibility” article (QCL 21/06/07) appears to be more a snide attempt to shoot the messenger (ABA) rather than addressing the message.

Hormel has being importing products labelled “Product of the USA”, which is actually product of Brazil. Why hasn’t Hormel been made to correct the label by AQIS or by the ACCC, which administers the Fair Trading Legislation? That legislation states that “Product of Australia” on a can means that the contents have been produced in Australia.

We seem to have two standards operating and Mr Phelps would do well to fully investigate the anomaly, instead of just ringing the customer service number of the importer. I for one, wish the origin of the product I am buying and a label stating ‘made from local and imported products”, with no indication of the ratio of said ingredients, or where they originated, is simply not good enough information for the consumer.

Australia is a “disease free” country in relation to beef exports, so why do we IMPORT meat products from countries with FMD and BSE? And please! please do not mention so called “Free Trade Agreements.

Yours sincerely,
